Coming to ALU, I knew that I really wanted to discover more about my deep passion for empowering women and work on growing it. My first internship at the Graca Machel Trust really helped me better understand my interest areas and how I could begin to turn that passion into something that could have a positive impact in my immediate community. Throughout my time here, I have been able to author a “Case Study of Innovative Ways to Empower African women”, in collaboration with a team of students in producing ALU’s first Gender Report, co-founded a female empowerment organisation that recently hosted a Women’s Conference on campus, and received an award from a top-consulting firm for my investment in women empowerment. I know for sure that many of these opportunities would not have come about had it not been for the immense support and guidance the university continuously affords us with and the constant narrative we are told to 'define our own learning experience.' ALU has truly enabled me to learn more about my passion, develop it and work on turning it into something bigger than I could have ever imagined!

Studying at the African Leadership University has given me an opportunity to develop skills in an environment that acknowledges my passions for social impact to contribute to challenges and opportunities present in the African continent. As an education enthusiast who highly believes the African continent can only be transformed through education, I started the Students4Students Foundation.
Additionally, my internship experiences have also provided me get a wide range of skills that are applicable in various disciplines and working environment. It has also allowed me to gain the communication and networking skills needed to build long-term business relationships with partners. All in all, African Leadership University is providing me with an invaluable experience to pursue my passion of becoming a strategic leader and global change-maker. -

One thing I like about ALU is the work study program. It gives students the opportunity to practice what they do in class, develop new skills, and most importantly take their first steps in the professional world. I’m currently a study intern at ALC Mauritius where, as a Residential Assistant, I drive the cultural integration of over 100 students from 35+ countries by organising social events and managing their queries. It’s an edifying experience in the sense where it contributes to the development of my leadership, planning, time management and communication skills that I will need once I’m in the professional world.

A personal key takeaway from my entire ALU experience has to be a quote that my Social Science facilitator once mentioned in passing during class. It was a statement made by James Ferguson who I consider to be an important intellectual ancestor. It reads: "Where you are positioned determines what you see." This phrase echoes in my mind as I continue on my learning journey because it serves as a constant reminder that position determines perspective. With this approach to life, it becomes much easier to interact with people and navigate the world in all of its uncertainties because it is not only underpinned by an acknowledgment of the different paths we are on but also recognition that we must go through our journeys with empathy and deep understanding of self and other. It is a lesson I intend to take with me throughout the rest of my life.
The only question that remains is, which campus is best for you?
Here are some quick facts about our two campuses.

ALC Mauritius is located in the northern region of Mauritius. Live and learn on a tropical paradise island often referred to as one of Africa’s most education-driven countries.
ALC Mauritius is a fully residential campus. Our facilities are a perfect blend of modern and tropical, with fully-equipped dorms overlooking sugarcane fields, not too far from beautiful beaches.

ALU Rwanda is located in the vibrant capital city of Kigali where you will immerse yourself in the heart of Africa’s safest and most innovative East African city.
ALU Rwanda is a non-residential campus. Students will be responsible for their own room, board, and meals.
